Official Old Bega Hospital Open Day

7 August 2025

After more than 20 years, the Old Bega Hospital has been revived. Design 5 — Architects is proud to have led the conservation and reconstruction of this significant 1888 building, a project grounded in a deep respect for the past.

Severely damaged by fire in 2004, the hospital’s revival has been a long-term community endeavour. Our approach combined rigorous archival research, conservation expertise, and collaboration with NSW Public Works. Where possible, historic materials were retained and repaired; where necessary, sensitive replacements were made in line with original detailing and heritage values.

Key to our philosophy was navigating the fine balance between preservation and adaptation, ensuring the legacy of the original structure could support the needs of a modern community facility.

We were honoured to see the project recognised at the 2025 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards, receiving both the Judges’ Choice and Built Heritage Conservation Awards.
