Constructed in 1967, the former Reader’s Digest Building in Surry Hills is a unique representation of post war modern commercial architecture and highly regarded for its organic expression of structure and raw natural materials. It was originally designed by architect John James, and is a synthesis of architecture, landscape and sculpture, with significant contributions by the late pioneering landscape architect Bruce Mackenzie, and leading graphic designer, muralist and sculptor Douglas Annand.
Design 5 – Architects were engaged in 2017 to investigate opportunities to improve the amenity of the building, reinstatement of the rooftop garden with Mackenzie’s original planting scheme and activation of the ground floor plate (that was used for warehousing and printing machinery up until Reader’s Digest vacated the building in 2004).
The design of these works, including associated conservation and refurbishment works, were underpinned by detailed research carried out as part of the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan.
In 2024, SJB joined the project team to collaborate in the design of the interior commercial fit-out.
Construction is due to commence in 2025.
