ADAPTIVE RE-USE WITH NEW WORKS
1998-2000
In association with Crone Architects, Design 5 – Architects was engaged to undertake the conservation works and oversee the adaptation of the extensively fire-damaged remains of George Patterson House, a multi storeyed late nineteenth century emporium and warehouse for use as a boutique hotel and function centre.
One of the main objectives of this project was to retain evidence of the devastating fire and at the same time reinstate a sense of the scale and proportion of the lost significant elements of the building.
Design 5 – Architects gave conservation advice throughout the design and construction process, contributing to a very successful reinvigoration of the building that clearly celebrates its history and its new contemporary function. Complemented by the interior fitout, the result is a highly celebrated CBD hotel that hosts a variety of character spaces across four floors and a basement nightclub.
