The World’s 50 Best Hotels List 2024: The Tasman Hotel

2 October 2024

The Tasman Hotel located in Hobart has been recognised in the coveted World’s 50 Best Hotels list by a global academy of well-travelled experts in the hotel and travel industry. It is one of only two Australian hotels to have been included.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy is the mechanism used to create The World’s 50 Best Hotels list. The Academy comprises 600 members, each selected for their expert opinion of the international hotel scene, with a 50/50 gender balance.

The hotel was established through the adaptive reuse of a historically significant suite of buildings – including St Mary’s Hospital (1848 hospital for paupers), 1862 Government Printers Office, 1920 Hydro Electric Department and 1939 Art Deco building – into a 152-room luxury hotel, including cocktail bar, two restaurants, underground parking, retail and public plaza.

Works included structural remediation, conservation of original building fabric, upgrading building elements for fire safety, access, acoustics, inserting services, and fitting out spaces to accommodate a luxury hotel – whilst retaining and featuring the buildings’ unique qualities.  The interior of the site was also opened up and reactivated with a public plaza.

Design 5 – Architects were engaged as conservation architects, working in collaboration with project architects fjcstudio and developer Citta Property Group.
