CONSULTATION AND REFURBISHMENT
2016 – 2017
The Australian Museum, established in 1827, is believed to be the fifth-oldest natural history museum in the world. The Long Gallery, now the Westpac Long Gallery, opened in 1854 as the first purpose-built museum exhibition space in Australia.
Conservation and refurbishment works to the gallery were undertaken in 2017 ahead of a new exhibition featuring the Museum’s most treasured objects. The work included removal of unsympathetic alterations, general upgrades, exhibition fit-out and conservation works to the gallery interiors.
The project restores the grandeur and richness of the space as an architectural display cabinet, retrieving qualities of authenticity, history and craftsmanship that are fundamental to the Museum’s identity.
