CURTILAGE STUDY AND CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT PLAN
Completed
The Denbigh property with its very early homestead, outbuildings and setting has long been considered one of the more significant rural places in the Sydney region. With the present rapid urban expansion of Sydney into previously unaltered and early rural landscapes, there has been much concern by various councils, the National Trust and the NSW Heritage Council that this expansion be managed in a way which reduces negative impacts on significant places including on their setting and curtilages. The owners of Denbigh initially commissioned Design 5 to undertake an assessment of the curtilage of the property to define those areas essential to Denbigh’s significance, and thus determine those areas which could be alienated for urban development. The estate with its significant curtilage was subsequently listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.
Design 5 was then commissioned to prepare a CMP for this state significant place. Relevant consultants were engaged by Design 5 to assist with the identification and assessment of significant Aboriginal archaeology, European historical significance and cultural landscape aesthetic significance. Many of the findings were graphically presented in a series of maps. Design 5 were also involved with the Master Plan which responds directly to this Curtilage Study and CMP.
Design 5 plays an ongoing role in advising the owners of the place on conservation and related issues.
