Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Opening

14 January 2026

“The concept and design of the new cycleway ramp builds on the heroic engineering and design excellence of the 1932 Sydney Harbour Bridge, adding a previously unrecognised layer to its history and significance. The bridge was erected at a point of confluence of ancient paths of travel, trade and cultural exchange and with the addition of this new ramp, this aspect of its story is being made more evident and celebrated by its design, configuration and structure,” says Alan Croker, principal and director of Design 5 – Architects.

The coming together of Gadigal and Cammeraygal Country is depicted by two eels in the paving design. Granite from the historic Moruya Quarry on Yuin Country, originally used for the Bridge’s pylons, represents the grey eel heading north. Calca granite from Nawu Country, also used at the Sydney Opera House, forms the red eel heading south.

The cycleway is a thoughtful and finely crafted addition to a highly sensitive setting, supporting everyday cycling and honouring both Country and the Bridge’s enduring significance.

Design 5 – Architects is proud to have collaborated as heritage architects with an incredible team comprised of Aspect Studios (landscape and urban design), Collins and Turner (architecture), Eco Engineers (engineering and industrial design), Yerrabingin (First Nations consultants), Stantec (engineering), Electrolight (lighting design), Madwings Murals (artwork).

The project has been delivered by Arenco for Transport NSW.
