New Building in Sensitive Rural Enviornment

Rouse Hill Estate is a house museum and a working farm, overseen by a caretaker who required a new residence. The cottage, which incorporated a farm managerís office and public toilets for visitors, had to be low maintenance, low energy and use passive means of cooling. The siting of the new building aimed to provide good surveillance and security for the main house and outbuildings, but not intrude on the visual relationships between buildings and major views to and from the site. The client also required the building to utilise the language of the existing buildings on the site, but in a contemporary manner. The new building is a harmonious insertion into the cultural landscape.
