NEWINGTON ARMORY, RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION
Adaptive re-use of armory buildings and precinct, Homebusy Bay, NSW

Completion: 2004-2006
Client: Sydney Olympic Park Authority

Adaptive re-use with new works

Design 5 was involved in the adaptation of four buildings within the Newington Armory Precinct for new overnight accommodation and associated facilities. Work included the addition of external verandahs and a new link structure. These spaces improve passive heating/cooling and ventilation and the link canopy provides a visual focus and entry point to the precinct as well as a protected external assembly space for school groups.

The project demonstrates that cultural significance is not determined on the basis of grandness or ornate decoration; simple and modest buildings can tell their own stories about the significance, function, use and evolution of a place.
