MARY ANN STREET HOUSING
Low cost housing project at Ultimo, NSW

Completion: 1993 -1996
Client: Sydney Cove Authority

Adaptive re-use with new works

Carried out in association with Allen Jack + Cottier Architects, this project sought to investigate and realise a low cost housing solution based on ecologically sustainable development within a campus of heritage buildings. This involved use of recycled materials and building fabric, alternative energy and hydraulic systems, intelligent building and landscape design and sensitive selection of materials, fixtures and fittings.

Design 5 - Architects undertook conservation works to the existing terrace houses. They required extensive repair and conservation works as well as upgrading of services and extensions into the roof spaces. In addition a new block of apartments was designed by Allen Jack + Cottier Architects.

The project won the RAIA (NSW) Merit Award for Architecture award in 1995.
