ARGYLE CENTRE
Former warehouses, The Rocks, NSW

Completion: 1993 -1996
Client: Sydney Cove Authority

Adaptive re-use with new works

The Argyle stores (1826-1914) are a warehouse group highly evocative of nineteenth century commercial Sydney, refurbished in the 1970s as an arts and craft centre. Design 5 - Architects was engaged for conservation consultancy by primary architects Orwell & Peter Phillips Architects who also engaged Allen Jack + Cottier Architects for refurbishment design.

Conservation principles were paramount to successful design solutions and accordingly, original loading bays and hatches were reopened, providing architectural ‘theatre’ while allowing a clearer understanding of the building’s history and original function.

The Argyle centre refurbishment demonstrates an exciting synthesis of fine contemporary design with a high standard of conservation, retaining the honesty and integrity of both.
